Brian, Dashdrop rider in Nairobi

Brian joined Dashdrop in January 2024 with a borrowed bicycle and KSh 5,000 to his name. Fourteen months later, he owns his own motorcycle and has a growing M-Pesa savings account. This is his story.

Brian Mwangi joined Dashdrop in January 2024 with a borrowed bicycle and KSh 5,000 to his name. He was 24, living with three younger siblings in Kasarani, and looking for work that fit around his studies at the University of Nairobi.

Within his first week, Brian completed 47 deliveries — more than any other new rider that month. He quickly learned the fastest routes through Westlands and Parklands, memorised restaurant prep times, and figured out which customers preferred a call over a text notification.

By June 2024, Brian had earned enough to purchase his own motorcycle through Dashdrop's rider financing programme. His daily earnings roughly doubled. He began sending money home to his mother in Kisumu and opened his first savings account with Equity Bank.

"Dashdrop gave me a structure," he told us when we visited him last month. "I knew every day I could earn. That predictability — that's what changed things for me." Brian is now mentoring three new riders and has applied for the Dashdrop operations apprenticeship programme.
