Expanding to a new city is never simple. Different traffic patterns, different neighbourhoods, a different rhythm of life. Here's an honest account of the five months it took to get Dashdrop ready for Mombasa — and what we learned.

Five months ago, our operations team first drew a circle around Mombasa Island on a map. The city looked like a natural fit — a dense, walkable centre, a food and retail scene that has always run on informal logistics, and a population hungry for reliable same-day delivery. But every city reveals its complexity only after you commit to it.

The first challenge was the address system. Mombasa's older neighbourhoods — Mvita, Old Town, Kisauni — use informal address references that don't map cleanly to what GPS expects. We spent six weeks building a local address layer, training riders to use landmarks, and testing edge cases before we were confident we could hit a consistent delivery time.

The second challenge was rider recruitment. Mombasa has a strong boda boda culture, but not all riders are accustomed to the discipline of a dispatched delivery network. We ran two cohorts of orientation sessions at our temporary office in Nyali, onboarding 55 riders before launch day.

Launch day — 12 May 2025 — was smoother than we expected. Our first fifty orders delivered in an average of nineteen minutes. The team in Mombasa is sharp, motivated, and deeply proud of the city. We are proud to serve it alongside them.
